LEE COUNTY CELEBRATES RIBBON CUTTING AT KIWANIS CHILDREN’S PARK

LEE COUNTY, NC – October 11, 2021 – Lee County Government is excited to announce the reopening of Kiwanis Children’s Park and extends invitations to all Lee County residents to celebrate with a ribbon cutting at the park on Friday, October 15 at 10 a.m.

“This is a long-awaited project for our community!” said Lee County Development Services Director Santiago Giraldo. “Our department couldn’t be happier to be sharing this monumental event in our County’s history, as this ambitious project was made possible by community support and great partnerships; and will, without a doubt, change the landscape of our county and become a gathering destination for generations to come.”

Kiwanis Children’s Park — part of a four-park revitalization plan that also includes Horton, Temple and O.T. Sloan Parks — was designed to be all inclusive for all. Construction resurfaced the existing two adult tennis courts and rebuilt tennis courts sized for children ranging from 5 to 11. The youth tennis courts can also double as pickleball courts. In addition to these features, the park has a newly installed playground that is accessible to children of all ages. There is ample parking and two new picnic shelters to encourage the community to enjoy the revitalized recreational space.

J.M. Thompson served as the general contractor on this project, as well as the three remaining parks projects, with WithersRavenel as the architect.

“It has been a pleasure working with Lee County staff to revitalize four signature parks in the Sanford community,” said Travis Thompson, Director of Operations at J.M. Thompson Company. “I can honestly say these parks offer something for everyone and every age. As a father of a young child myself, I will be proud to take my son to see the youth tennis courts and towering playground at Kiwanis Children’s Park.”

“In this current era of hand-held devices, our children are not expending as much energy in the form of healthy physical activity,” said Lee County Commission Chairman Kirk Smith. “Anything that promotes exercise, gets kids outside to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine is great! The new playground equipment at Kiwanis Children’s Park will most definitely stimulate the adventurous and inquisitive nature of children to get them outside as well as being active.”
