LEE COUNTY, NC – January 9, 2020 – On Monday, January 13, 2020, Lee County Government will welcome Joseph Keel as the new Parks and Recreation Director.  Mr. Keel will be filling the role vacated by the recently retired, John Payne who had served as the director since 1998.

“We are very excited to have Joseph on board,” shared County Manager John Crumpton.  “Any time you are able to bring in a fresh perspective, you are able to generate fresh enthusiasm and new ideas.  I look forward to seeing what the future holds for Lee County Parks and Recreation under his direction.”

Mr. Keel comes to Lee County Government from the Town of Siler City where he served as the Parks and Recreation Director since 2017.  Prior to his time in Siler City, Mr. Keel served as Athletic Director for the Town of Aberdeen; where in 2016, he received the North Carolina Recreation and Park Association (NCRPA) Outstanding Young Professional Award.

Keel lives with his family in Sanford and when the position at the county became available, he could not pass up the opportunity to work in his hometown.

“Public service is as much about giving back to the community as it is about work,” said Keel.  “Working for Lee County Government means I will have a direct impact in improving the quality of life for my family, friends and neighbors – I’m invested in Lee County and honored to serve as the next Parks and Recreation Director.”
