The Lee County Government (LCG) General Services Department will hold the Annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection (HHWC) Day this Saturday, November 3rd at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center from 9 AM – 1 PM. The event is free and open to all residential households in Lee County and excludes business and industry.
“We find that many residents in the county collect a small amount of household hazardous waste each year but that many do not know how to properly dispose of it,” said Joseph Cherry, LCG Solid Waste Superintendent. “We hope that by offering this free service each year, we provide the public with a safe, convenient, and cost effective way to dispose of household hazardous waste and avoid improper disposal or unintentional stockpiling of these items.”
The HHWC Day event allows county residents and farmers to dispose of household hazardous waste items including but not limited to kitchen cleaners, paint, batteries, motor oil, pesticides, and pool chemicals in a safe and proper manner. General Services reminds the public that when possible materials should be left in their original containers or placed in leak-proof sealed containers. Chemicals should never be mixed and when possible, clearly identified with a label. The public is reminded that when transporting items to the event, do not place hazardous waste items with children and pets in the same area of your vehicle.
As an added convenience, Project Lazarus of Lee County will also be on-site at the Civic Center Saturday from 9 AM – 1 PM offering prescription drug take back services. As county households dispose of their household hazardous waste, they also have the opportunity to safely dispose of old, expired, and unused prescription medication.
